New Moon January 16th 2018 in Capricorn

The January 2018 New Moon in Capricorn occurs at 9:17 PM EST on Tuesday, January 16th. The Moon then goes void-of-course at 1:30 AM on the next day (you can also think of it at that evening). The good news is that the Moon is in Sagittarius all day January 15th and it enters Sagittarius at 2:42 PM on Sunday, January 14th, so it will essentially be in Sagittarius for two full days. This gives us plenty of time to work with this New Moon. This information is also detailed in my January 2018 Cosmic Concerns post and is listed below.

New Moon January 2018 Timing

  • January 14th, Sunday: Moon enters Capricorn at 2:42 PM
  • January 15th, Monday: Moon is in Capricorn all day
  • January 16th, Tuesday: Moon is in Capricorn all day; New Moon at 9:42 PM
  • January 17th, Wednesday: Moon goes void-of-course at 1:30 AM

Practically speaking, all this means you can do your New Moon ritual on the evening of the 16th (recommended), or any time on the 15th.

The two week manifestation point for this New Moon is on Wednesday, January 31st 2018 with the Full Blue Moon in Leo. The six month manifestation point is on Thursday, June 28th 2018 with the Full Moon in Capricorn.

My guide, Witch’s Guide to New Moon Magick, can be found on the site here; this post is a companion to that guide. If you’re new to Moon magick that’s a great place to begin.

New Moon in Capricorn

Capricorn is the tenth sign of the zodiac, a Cardinal, and an Earth sign that is ruled by Saturn. Capricorn is associated with winter and is associated by my favorite mythological animal, the hippocampus. It is the zodiac’s hard worker, ambitious, and anxious for a project. They are goal-oriented to the point of stubbornness, and can be curmudgeonly thanks to ruling planet Saturn.

In fact, Saturn moved into Capricorn in December 2017, and will stay there until 2020, making this an excellent time to work with Capricorn energy. This sign wants to be at the top of the mountain, and this can make them come off as domineering or egotistical, but they’d say that’s just the price you pay for being the best. Capricorns can also be patient, level-headed, fair dealing, and full of common sense. Yet, they can occasionally be unforgiving, and crave recognition for their work. This is a down-to-Earth sign that, like all Earth signs, isn’t afraid of hard work; as a Cardinal sign, Capricorn initiates action.

New Moon December 18th 2017 in Sagittarius

Sagittarius Plate from Urania's Mirror

The December 2017 New Moon in Sagittarius occurs at 1:30 AM EST on Monday, December 18th. The Moon then goes void-of-course at 8:10 AM on the same day, so even though the New Moon is technically on the 18th, you will almost certainly observe it before (unless you’re a night owl). The Moon then enters Capricorn at 8:33 AM that same day. The good news is that the Moon is in Sagittarius all day December 16th and 17th, and it enters Sagittarius at 8:07 PM on Friday December 15th, so it will essentially be in Sagittarius for two full days. This gives us plenty of time to work with this New Moon. This information is also detailed in my December 2017 Cosmic Concerns and is listed below.

New Moon December 2017 Timing

  • December 15th, Friday: Moon enters Sagittarius 8:07 PM
  • December 16th, Saturday: Moon is in Sagittarius all day
  • December 17th, Sunday: Moon is in Sagittarius all day
  • December 18th, Monday: New Moon at 1:30 AM; Moon void-of-course 8:10 AM, enters Capricorn 8:33 AM

Practically speaking, all this means you can do your New Moon ritual after 8:07 PM on the 15th, or any time on the 16th or 17th (recommended). Remember that this New Moon is also during a Mercury Retrograde, so tread lightly when it comes to putting big plans into action.

New Moon November 18th 2017 in Scorpio

The November 2017 New Moon in Scorpio occurs at 6:42 AM EST on Saturday, November 18th, which is when the Moon also goes void-of-course (a not uncommon occurrence). The Moon then enters Sagittarius at 1:59 PM that same day. The good news is that the Moon is in Scorpio all day Friday November 17th, and it enters Scorpio at 3:19 AM on Thursday November 16th, so it will essentially be in Scorpio for two full days. This information is also detailed in my Cosmic Concerns: November 2017 post if you’d like to see this information as a list.

What this means is that you can do your New Moon ritual after 3:19 AM on the 16th (shouldn’t be too hard since I hope you’ll be sleeping then), or any time on the 17th.

The two week manifestation point for this New Moon is on Sunday, December 3rd with the Full Moon in Gemini. This also happens to be when Mercury goes Retrograde in Sagittarius, oh goody gumdrops. The six month manifestation point is on Sunday, April 29th 2018 with the Full Moon in Scorpio.

New Moon October 19th 2017 in Libra

The October 2017 New Moon in Libra occurs at 3:12 PM EST on Thursday, October 19th, which is when the Moon also goes void-of-course (thanks, Moon). The Moon then enters Scorpio at 9:41 PM that same day. The good news is that the Moon is in Libra all day Wednesday October 18th, and it enters Libra at 1:35 PM on Tuesday October 17th. This information is also detailed in my Cosmic Concerns: October 2017 post if you’d like to see this information as a list.

That means you can do your New Moon ritual after 1:35 PM on the 17th, any time on the 18th, or before 3:12 PM on the 19th. For charging, you can leave items out on the night or either the 17th or the 18th, but if you wait until the night of the 19th they will be charged with Scorpio energy, rather than Libra energy.

The two week manifestation point for this New Moon is on Saturday, November 4th with the New Moon in Taurus. The six month manifestation point is on Sunday, March 31st 2018 with the Full Moon in Libra. The March 2018 Full Moon in Libra will actually be a Blue Moon, which is the name for the second Full Moon in a calendar month.

A Witch’s Guide to New Moon Magick

This post is meant to be used as a companion to my New Moon posts. Additionally, I wrote a Witch’s Guide to Full Moon Magick post. Hopefully, with these posts combined, you’ll have the tools you need to conduct your esbats. Witchcraft is very personal, so pick and choose things that you like to do, test it out, change it, and find something that works for your Craft.

What is New Moon Magick?

A New Moon, in the literal sense, is the phase in the moon’s orbit around the Earth wherein the moon is ‘invisible’ to us here on the planet. This is because the Earth is blocking the light from the Sun from reflecting off of the Moon as it normally does. The moon will appear dark during the New Moon, which occurs every 28 days.

Magickally speaking, New Moons are used for setting intentions with a manifestation point at the next Full Moon which happens about two weeks later. Also, and way more importantly, there is a second, larger manifestation at the Full Moon that happens around six months (six lunations) later in the same sign. For example, if the New Moon is in Scorpio, there will be a Full Moon in two weeks in a different sign, and six months later there will be a Full Moon in Scorpio that completes the lunar cycle.

The New Moons is an opportunity to set intentions and put into action things that really matter, and that you truly feel are beneficial to you as a person. Also, since the cycle won’t be complete for six months, I believe it’s important to do a little divination as well.

New Moon July 23rd 2017 in Leo

The July 2017 New Moon in Leo occurs at 5:46 AM EST on Sunday July 23rd, and your New Moon ritual can be done anytime after 5:46 AM on the 23rd and all day Monday the 24th.

On Sunday the 25th the Moon goes void-of-course at 2:44 PM then enters Leo at 6:06 PM, but your New Moon ritual should be performed before then, ideally. A lot of other planets are in Cancer for this Moon as well, so expect a big wave a Cancer energy coming.

New Moons are used for setting intentions with a manifestation point at the next Full Moon which happens in about two weeks, August 7th for this New Moon. Also, and way more importantly, there is a second, larger manifestation at the Full Moon that happens around six months later in the same sign. For this New Moon its six month Full Moon will happen on January 31st 2018.

New Moon June 23rd 2017 in Cancer

June’s New Moon in Cancer occurs at 10:31 PM EST on Friday the 23rd, and you can do your New Moon ritual on either the night of Thursday the 22nd, Friday the 23rd, or Saturday the 24th at any time. Compared to other New Moons this year, we have a ton of time this go round. All of this information is available in list form in my June 2017 Cosmic Concerns post. The manifestation point for this New Moon is on January 2nd 2018.

My guide, Witch’s Guide to New Moon Magick, can be found on the site here; this post is a companion to that guide. If you’re new to Moon magick that’s a great place to begin.

New Moon in Cancer

Cancer is the fourth sign of the zodiac, a cardinal sign, a Water sign, and ruled by the Moon. Cancer is very centered in the home and on family. Being ruled by the Moon it’s not surprising that Cancer is a very emotional sign and they are very open emotionally; they can also hold on to slights because of this or retreat into themselves. As a cardinal sign, Cancer is good at getting stuff moving. A Cancer can be moody, and would often rather go around than through, but they are also affectionate and loving. They tend to be homebodies, but are attracted to big personalities.

A Witch’s Guide to Lunar Trackers

Bullet journaling seems to be tailor made for witches of all levels who are interested in tracking their practice. A sub-set of bullet journaling is graphic trackers, of which a moon wheel is about as perfect for witchcraft as you can get. Lunar trackers can be used to keep track of the minutiae of the moon’s movement throughout the lunar cycle, thus helping witches move into advanced spell work and get to know themselves (and their craft) better.

Getting into intermediate and advanced witchcraft requires more advanced lunar tracking techniques; whether you choose to use the information or not, it’s good to know where the moon’s at. While waiting until there is a waxing moon in Scorpio to do you body-positivity spell may sound fussy, it can give a much-needed boost to witches moving into a phase of more advanced spellwork. My disclaimer is that, if you’re a baby witch who is just starting out, don’t be bothered too much about moon times or signs. Full moon and new moon are the only dates you need to know, once you’re completely comfortable with that, then move on to more advanced tracking.

I recommend using the lunar tracking wheel (pictured above) made by Cheeky Magpie; I like a plain one, but she also created some with seasonal backgrounds that are very nice. Witches are not, by a big stretch of the imagination, the only people who track the moon. People plant by it, fish by it, breed animals by it, track their cycles by it, even use the moon to monitor their moods; just about anything you can think of people have used these moon charts for. Because they are so non-denominational, I’ll show you how to witch them up for your practice.

All times listed are in EST (Eastern Standard) and should be adjusted for your own time zone. Please note that this list is not even close to being exhaustive, but compiled by me to list events that would be of magickal importance. New Moon May 25th 2017 in Gemini

May’s New Moon in Gemini occurs at 3:44 PM EST on Thursday the 25th, and you can do your New Moon ritual on either the night of Thursday the 25th or Friday the 26th at any time. I’m very happy that this New Moon has more time in which to observe it than some of the previous ones this year. The only hiccup is if you try to observe the New Moon early on Wednesday the 24th, the Moon will be void-of-course from 3:08 PM until 8:15 AM on Thursday the 25th when it enters Gemini.

The two week manifestation point for this New Moon is June 9th with the Full Moon in Sagittarius. Its six month Full Moon will happen on December 3rd 2017 with the Full Moon in Gemini.

My guide, Witch’s Guide to New Moon Magick, can be found on the site here; this post is a companion to that guide. If you’re new to Moon magick that’s a great place to begin.

New Moon April 26th 2017 in Taurus

April’s New Moon in Taurus occurs at 8:16 AM EST on Wednesday the 26th, and you can do your New Moon ritual on either the night of Tuesday the 25th or the 26th at any time. Honestly, I’m just happy this isn’t one of those difficult-to-time Moons, and that I can just settle in on the night of the 26th and get things done. However, if you procrastinate until Thursday the 27th be sure to get it done before 9:18 PM EST because the Moon moves from Taurus to void-of-course to Gemini all in the space of about 20 minutes, that busy Moon.

The two week manifestation point for this New Moon is the Full Moon on May 10th 2017 in Scorpio. The six month manifestation point for this New Moon is the Full Moon in Taurus on November 4th 2017.

New Moon December 29th 2016 in Capricorn

Stellarscapes by Oriol Angrill Jorda

December 2016’s New Moon in Capricorn occurs at 1:53 AM EST on Thursday the 29th, and you can do your New Moon ritual in Capricorn on either the night of the 28th or the 29th. However, if you want until the 30th the Moon will be void-of-course until 8:29 PM when it enters Aquarius.

The two week manifestation point for this New Moon is January 12th Full Moon in Cancer. The six month manifestation point is on July 9th with the Full Moon in Capricorn.

My guide, Witch’s Guide to New Moon Magick, can be found on the site here; this post is a companion to that guide. If you’re new to Moon magick that’s a great place to begin.

New Moon in Capricorn

This is the last New Moon of 2016, so it’s a great opportunity to write your New Year’s Resolution list. You can also wait until January’s New Moon (which is the Lunar New Year) or the ‘traditional’ date of December 31st. If I’m planning on champagne and watching the ball drop, I’m not going to be fixated on goals, so I usually put them on separate dates. Since New Moon’s also have an aspect of ‘letting go’ to them, this would also be a good time to list what you really want to leave in 2016. Looking back on my older Esbats from 2016 I must say, it’s taken time, but it has been working. I also have my 2016 goal list to review. That will be fun – and terrifying! – I have no idea what’s on it.

New Moon November 29th 2016 in Sagittarius

Stellarscapes by Oriol Angrill Jorda

November’s New Moon in Sagittarius occurs at 7:18 AM EST on Tuesday the 29th, and you have plenty of time to observe the New Moon in that sign, unlike October’s New Moon, which required a little planning. The Moon enters Sagittarius at 3:46 PM on Monday the 28th, and stays there until 11:08 PM on Wednesday the 30th, when it goes void of course. In simple terms, you have the nights of the 28th, 29th, and the early evening of the 30th to perform your New Moon ritual. Our busy schedules thank you.

Sagittarius is my rising sign and I definitely have some strong Sag traits (teacher, anyone?) so this is great energy to harness. I’m especially excited about this lunar cycle because December 1st is the last day of classes for the semester, which marks my first complete semester teaching college. It also marks the beginning of a month long chunk of time I plan on devoting to writing. I have big plans!

Self-Love and Acceptance Spell

Casting this spell during a New Moon is ideal since it is about releasing negativity and setting new, positive intentions. Remember, when using fire always be cautious. You will be burning only a few small pieces of parchment paper, but if the fire gets out of control, place the lid on the cauldron so the fire will go out. Safety first, always.

Self-Love and Acceptance Spell

Ingredients:

  • Black candle (substitute silver)
  • Book of Shadows/magickal journal (optional)
  • Cauldron or fire-safe container with a lid
  • Lighter or matches
  • Parchment or paper, cut or torn into small pieces
  • Rose oil (substitute preferred scent)
  • Rose quartz (optional)
  • Writing utensil
  • Yellow candle (substitute white)

Directions:

To begin, cleanse, ground, and cast a circle to keep unwanted energy away. Using your small pieces of paper or parchment write things about yourself that you do not like and would like to release. Use one piece per release. If you have a long list it might be best to perform the spell several times over the course of a few months and release different things each month.

Be careful about your wording; this is a release of negative emotion. Don’t write “I’m ugly,” write “My negative self-image.” Write “Feeling shy around others,” but avoid “Boys/girls don’t like me.” Using the rose oil anoint your black candle from the top down to diminish negative energy. Take each piece of parchment and read it aloud saying, “I release: [text written on the paper],” then light it using the black candle and drop the paper into your cauldron to burn away.

The Lunar New Year 2016: The Year of the Monkey for Pagans

2016 the Year of the Monkey

The Lunar New Year was on February 8, 2016 this year, though technically, this is the 4,713th Lunar Year. As a Monkey (metal) myself I welcome all the new Monkeys (fire) born this year. Many pagans don’t know much about the Lunar New Year (also called the Chinese New Year), even though so many of us follow a Lunar cycle. I believe that there are lessons for us in it regardless, and as an eclectic Pagan-Taoist, it’s a holiday that is especially important to me.

Monkeys are a sign of laughter, goofiness, intelligence, and a lack of self-control. For me, some of it seems to make no sense because it am not indulgent in vices and I work hard, but if you look closer you’ll notice I have lots of hobbies and interests which removes the ability to focus on just one. I am a very sarcastic person, always joking, and was the class clown in High School, but I’m also also a teacher. As with all signs balance is key, so this is not necessarily going to be an easy year for us Monkeys, as we are the ones whose issues come to the forefront. That being said it has the potential to be amazing because happily our strengths are here as well! Physical health, good communication, and temperance must be kept in mind this lunar year. It is a year of activity, creativity, and harnessing those things, if you can make them work to your benefit, is a very good thing. Monkeys are smart but they can also be dishonest, so spend the year experimenting with honesty, it can be freeing (see Pamela Meyer’s “How to Spot a Liar” TED Talk). The Tao says not to try and eliminate your weaknesses, but to make them into your strengths, excellent advice for this lunar year.
