March 2018 Announcement

Dark Purple Flowers

Hello all, I have an announcement for March 2018, which is that I’m going to be writing a bit less this month. I have had way too much going on in my personal life at the moment, including almost $6K of unexpected expenses in the past three months from which I’m reeling, plus I will have to buy a new car very soon.

On top of it I’m dealing with a chronic illness that’s spawning little mini-illnesses, and just so I get the message, a (probably mentally ill) neighbor screamed at me yesterday for seemingly no reason. As I pulled my daily tarot card – reversed Wheel of Fortune, shocking no one – I realized that I just need to make this announcement.

I have a decent amount of content finished or mostly finished, so I’m dropping down to one post a week for March, and then I will reassess.

I hope your lives are better than mine! and, if not, I’m here for you.

PS: Edited this because I just remembered I have some people I know IRL who read this, so …  y’know.

February 2018 Magickal Link Roundup

Tea with Lavender Buds

It’s time for another magickal link roundup wherein I have compiled this month’s best resources from around the witchy web. Normally, this feature would be bi-monthly, but since February was a relatively quiet month in the cosmos, there weren’t many links to share around the halfway point.

Below you will find the my favorite links from around the magickal interweb from February 2018. If you have a favorite witchy post/blog/product to share, please feel free to post it in the comments.

~ February 2018 Magickal Link Roundup ~

Astrology & Numerology

Chinese Astrology: 2018 Tibetan and Chinese New Year of the Earth Dog on Mystic Mama – While Mystic Mama is a pretty good site, I have to say that I cannot stand these clunky post titles, it’s a strange pet peeve, but it’s nagging at me. I think it’s because I’m an English teacher by trade, and the titles read like they were written in another language and run through Google Translate. Regardless, this article is similar to the one below, various perspectives on the new Lunar year in Eastern astrology.

Chinese Astrology: Year of the Yang Earth Dog 2018 on Forever Conscious – As we exit the year of the Fire Rooster, this post gives an idea of what to expect during the upcoming lunar year.

February Numerology: Building Foundations for Love & Life on Astro Style – The monthly numerology report is always interesting, and I’ve found it to be generally accurate. My January report was correct, and I’m finding this monthly numerology report to be one of the best things this site produces.

Year of the Earth Dog: Your 2018 Chinese Horoscope on Astro Style – Their twist on this month’s common theme: what does the Year of the Earth Dog hold?

Tarot & Divination

Seventh Sphere Tarot de Marseille Deck by Labyrinthos Academy – This is a new release indie deck for February and is a stylistic companion to their Seventh Sphere Lenormand deck. The cards look really beautiful, my only complaint about collecting indie decks is the price: this one is $50 before shipping. (I still want it though.)

Tarot Birth Cards: Discover Your Inner Self on Biddy Tarot – I’m definitely interested in trying this out.

Moon Magick

A Free Moon Magic Coloring Page Set on Coloring Book of Shadows – You have to sign up for an email list to get this set, but they look pretty cute. I’m already subscribed, but haven’t gotten anything, so maybe you need to re-subscribe to get it? Update: Yes, you do.

Witchcraft & Paganism

A Druid’s Meditation Primer on A Druid’s Garden – This post goes into three different types of meditation, different types of breathwork, and includes three meditation exercises for the three phases of Druidry.

Love Potion Tea Recipe on The Witch of Lupine Hollow – I’m sure you all know I’m very against love spells, but this tea is for opening your heart up to love, a nice twist on a common witchcraft request. This blog always has interesting seasonal tea recipes, for the adventurous amongst us.

I hope you find these links helpful for you magickal doings. I very much enjoyed compiling them, and hope you find these resources useful, too. I will be back in March for another link roundup.

Blessed be, friends!

New Moon February 15th 2018 in Aquarius

Aquarius - Urania's Mirror

The February 2018 New Moon in Aquarius occurs at 4:05 PM EST on Thursday, February 15th. However, the Moon goes void-of-course at the exact same time, meaning you will need to observe this Full Moon sooner rather than later. The good news is that the Moon is in Aquarius all day February 14th, and it enters Aquarius at 10:11 AM on Tuesday, February 13th, so it will essentially be in Aquarius for two full days. This gives us plenty of time to work with this New Moon. This information is also detailed in my February 2018 Cosmic Concerns post and is listed below.

New Moon February 2018 Timing

  • February 13th, Tuesday: Moon enters Aquarius 10:11 AM
  • February 14th, Wednesday: Moon is in Aquarius all day
  • February 15th, Thursday: New Moon at 4:05 PM, void-of-course 4:05 PM, enters Pisces 9:42 PM

Practically speaking, all this means you can do your New Moon ritual after 10 AM on the 13th, any time on the 14th (recommended), or before 4 PM on the 15th.

The two week manifestation point for this New Moon is on Thursday, March 1st 2018 with the Full Worm Moon in Virgo. The six month manifestation point is on Friday, July 27th 2018 with the Full Moon in Aquarius. This New Moon marks the end up the Lunar Year, with the Lunar New Year occurring on February 16th and the year of the Dog.

My guide, Witch’s Guide to New Moon Magick, can be found on the site here; this post is a companion to that guide. If you’re new to Moon magick that’s a great place to begin.

New Moon in Aquarius

Aquarius is the eleventh sign of the zodiac, a Fixed, and an Air sign that is ruled by Uranus and Saturn. Aquarius is associated with social justice and responsibility. They are the zodiac’s rebel, and enjoy being unique and different. An Aquarius is more likely to have a lot of casual friendships, rather than a few deep ones, because they are a very social sign. Because of their confidence, they are able to make friends easily and are passionate about causes they believe in. No one loves a conspiracy theory more than an Aquarius, but maybe this is because they’re usually ahead of their time. Aquarius might be the water bearer, but any Aquarius would say that what they really carry is the truth! Saturn was the original ruler of the sign, but Uranus was also assigned to Aquarius after its discovery. This New Moon ushers in the Lunar New Year and is also a Solar Eclipse, which will give an extra boost of energy to your magick.

About the Witch: My Witchcraft Story

Hello all! I hope that you are all having a wonderful and magickal year thus far. I thought it would be a good idea to take a moment and introduce myself to new readers of Astra Anima. What better way than by telling the story of my own magickal journey?

About the Witch

Meet the WitchI’m Brigitte, the magickal writer behind Astra Anima, and an eclectic pagan Taoist witch. I was raised in an Eastern religious tradition (my father moved toward Buddhism as I moved toward Taoism), but even though I was brought up in those traditions, I never felt like I completely fit in. Still, my ideas about life, death, and ‘the Universe’ are very much informed by Taoism, so I’m include it in my official witch title at the moment.

I became a witch when I was in 8th grade (so about 13 years old) and met my best friend who became my first coven leader. We were in a coven for the next six years that eventually grew to have four regular members and, at the largest ritual, a total of about a dozen people. This is where I learned a lot of my pagan witchcraft foundations as we celebrated the Full Moons and Sabbats. I remember sitting in her bedroom with a copy of Scott Cunningham’s Earth, Air, Fire, Water taking copious notes in a cheap spiral notebook. We would sneak into the local park or clamor over the chain link fence behind her house into the scraggly the woods for our Esbats. There was one Sabbat we did at the beach where our grill was pulled into the ocean; I will always remember her chasing it into the water, dodging the hot coals that floated out as she retrieved it.

Late January 2018 Magickal Link Roundup

Late January 2018 Witch Links

It’s time for another magickal link roundup wherein I have compiled this fortnight’s best resources from around the witchy web. Today is also the Full Blue Supermoon in Leo with an eclipse visible from some spots around the globe. If that seems like a lot – it is – this Full Moon is the manifestation for the August 2017 New Moon in Leo that caused solar eclipse. Thank you to everyone who has been checking out the post of the last few days!

Below you will find the my favorite links from around the magickal interweb from the latter half of January 2018. If you have a favorite witchy post/blog/product to share, please feel free to post it in the comments.

Astrology & Numerology

The New Age of Astrology by Julie Beck on The Atlantic – Honestly, the article was kind of cringey and hard to read for me, because it largely focused on why people (or the author) thinks astrology is nonsense. Really, though, the more I’ve learned the more about astrology, I’m surprised at how accurate it is. How we all feel so unique, special, and self-determining and … well, we aren’t, that more than you’d think is in the stars. I do think it’s good to see how the muggles feel though, and if you can get through this read, you will get some information on the current modern perspective on astrology.

Tarot & Divination

A Full Moon in Leo Tarot Spread on Labyrinthos Academy – A four-card courage themed tarot spread for the January 31st 2018 Full Moon in Leo.

What’s Old is New by Barbara Moore on Llewellyn Unbound – It starts with information on a new book, but what I like about the post is at the end: a tarot spread from a 1955 magazine. The spread is pictured and is an interesting variation on a simple yes/no reading.

Early January 2018 Magickal Link Roundup

January 2018 Links for Witches and Pagans

It’s time for another magickal link roundup wherein I have compiled this fortnight’s best resources from around the witchy web. I hope that 2018 is off to a good start for you all! I’m back to work and the grading grind (I’m a community college adjunct professor), which is kind of stale even when it’s fresh. Even though I love writing materials (hence this website) and staying organized, I’m ho hum on grading, since I essentially give the same feedback all the time. Of course, no one loves 100% of any job, so c’est la vie. I definitely miss writing for this website all December long and doing nothing else!

Below you will find the my favorite links from around the magickal interweb from the first half of January 2018. If you have a favorite witchy post/blog/product to share, please feel free to post it in the comments.

Astrology & Numerology

2018 Numerology: Balancing the “Me” and “We” in the 11/2 Universal Year on Astrostyle – 2018 is a Year 2 in numerology, a year of patience and planting seeds. This article goes into the details of what to expect in 2018, which is both a Year 2 and an 11 Master number year (and they go into what that means). As a numerology nerd from way back I always love to read about what the numbers have in store for us.

January Numerology: A New Personal Year Number for 2018 on Astro Style – I read this post about personal year numbers (any other 6’s out there?) and was like, “Hmm, interesting,” then an hour later it was clear that this was going to be completely accurate. Definitely check it out, maybe print yours and add it to your Book of Shadows, and plan on reflecting on it at the end of the month.

Books & Publications

Sigil Witchery: A Witch’s Guide to Crafting Magick Symbols by Laura Tempest Zakroff – Released on January 8th 2018 this book is all about sigil magick, a topic that I’m interested in learning more about. I won’t be buying it until I’ve seen in it person though; I know it’s weird, but I don’t like irregularly sized books, and this one is square. For me to buy a square book that’s going to drive me crazy, it would have to be really good. Hopefully, I will see it in person soon so that I can flip through it.

Astra Anima’s Grimoire Zine: Issue 1 Protection and Reflection

Astra Anima's Grimoire Issue I: Protection and Reflection I’m super excited to announce that I’ve released my first witchcraft zine: Astra Anima’s Grimoire.

Issue #1: Protection & Reflection is a collection of spells, tools, and research on those two topics.

I’m a zinester from way back, so for me this is a return to my roots. My dad was a pretty well known figure in zines and underground comix in the 70s, and he got me into zines as a child. I published my first zine at the age of 7 and have published probably around 70 zines in my lifetime, including a long-running zine about my personal life that I wrote in High School (so cringy now).

Some of the spells in Issue #1 are revised and updated versions of articles that appear on this blog, while others are brand new and will never be published online. All told there are 5 protection/reflection magickal spells, 3 resource lists, and a further reading section.

The contents, in order, are:

  • Tourmaline Spell to Return Negativity
  • Sage Spell for Eliminating Negativity (preview shown below)
  • Witch Tips: Crystals for Protection (preview shown below)
  • How to Make & Use Cascarilla
  • Witch Tips: Deities & Spirits for Protection
  • Pillow Spell for Ending Bad Dreams
  • Evil Eye Jewelry Enchantment
  • Witch Tips: Plants and Trees for Protection
  • Bibliography & Recommended Reading

Astra Anima’s 2017 Year in Review

2017 Year in Review

2017 was my second year writing here on Astra Anima; I wrote for much of the Spring, took some time off over the Summer, (thankfully) found my muse again, and returned to writing in the Fall. This year I feel like I figured out my voice, both in the sense of what I wanted to write, and how I wanted to write it.

Much of the information that I post here is information that goes straight into my own magickal diary: recipes I cook in my own kitchen, information that I’ve researched, and spells that I’ve performed myself (and that have worked). Writing here gives me a better understanding of my own path and makes me a better witch; that you want to read it too is such an honor to me.

Below you will find the eight most popular posts on the blog this year, as well as my eight personal favorites. At the bottom of the page is a look forward to 2018.

Top 8 Articles

  1. A Witch’s Guide to Starting Your Grimoire and/or Book of Shadows
  2. A Witch’s Guide to Organizing Your Grimoire and/or Book of Shadows

Late December 2017 Magickal Link Roundup

Magickal Links for Late December 2017

It’s time for another magickal link roundup, the last one of 2017 to be exact! I’ve been finding so many wonderful resources around the witchy web that I’ve had a couple of requests to break this monthly post into two, more digestible, bi-monthly chunks. I think it’s a great idea, so here is part two of December’s magickal link roundup.

Below you will find the my favorite links from around the magickal interweb from the second half of December 2017. If you have a favorite witchy post/blog/product to share, please feel free to post it in the comments.

Astrology & Numerology

2018 Horoscopes: Your Yearly Astrological Forecast on Astrostyle – There is a lot of movement in the stars in 2018; this post is an overview of what to expect with specific details for each sign.

January Month Horoscope: Intentions Get Activated on Astrostyle – Very similar to their post above, but more information on planetary movement in January and what it means.

Books & Publications

Femme Fatale Volume 2 Zine on Little Paper Forest – I got this fancy zine as a holiday gift and absolutely love it. $15 is a bit pricey for a zine, but the print and paper quality is excellent, and I loved the content of the zine itself. If it appeals to you, I highly recommend it.

DIY & Handmade

DIY Swan Garland on A Beautiful Mess – A very cute idea for a garland made with cookie cutters and Sculpey. It looks really easy to make, which I like, and could be adapted for many different Sabbats.

Astrology and Numerology

Astrology Forecast for 2018 on Forever Conscious – This post goes over some of the big astrological shifts anticipated in 2018, but without specific dates. It looks at the vibe of what’s ahead, for example, there are lots of outer planets in Earth signs. There are also more than a few eclipses, but I’ve never put much stock in that, since an eclipse is just a New Moon in the daytime.

December Numerology: Creating Space for What’s to Come on Astrostyle – I think the numerology posts are some of the strongest they write, and I always enjoy seeing if and how the information plays out over the course of the month.

November 2017 Magickal Link Roundup

Late November 2017 Magickal Links for Witches and Pagans

It’s time for another magickal link roundup! Here’s hoping you had a lovely Thanksgiving (if you celebrate it) and that you weren’t tempted to use your magick to make anyone choke on a turkey bone. Ours was actually lovely, I’m happy to say, even if our witchlings weren’t around like normal. Now it’s Sagittarius season, and it’s full speed ahead into the winter holidays.

Below you will find the my favorite links from around the magickal interweb from the month of November. There are over 20 (!) links this month, so lots of things to peruse. To make it easier to navigate, I’ve sorted them into categories. Would this feature work better for you if it appeared twice a month instead of once? Also, if you have a favorite witchy post/blog/product to share, please feel free to post it in the comments.

Astrology and Numerology

How to Be an Aquarius by Sailor J (YouTube) – My partner is an Aquarius and this, like the Scorpio video, is super accurate and hilarious. “Wake up, sheeple!” Sailor J has also done videos for Cancer and Leo that are wonderful, too. The most recent addition is Aries and it had me laughing out loud.

Intuitive Astrology: Venus and Jupiter November 2017 on Forever Conscious – Venus and Jupiter cross paths in Scorpio this month, something that won’t happen again until January 2019. This article discusses what this energy means and what we can do with it (hint: it’s positive energy) as the holidays loom large on the horizon.

November Numerology: Manifesting Abundance & Sharing the Wealth on Astrostyle – I’ve been a numerology fan for quite a while and have found this monthly numerology report to be quite accurate in the past. I put the info in my BoS and then reflect on it at the end of the month.

October 2017 Magickal Link Roundup

Samhain blessings to you all! It’s time for another magickal link roundup!

I started this magickal link roundup feature last month and I really enjoyed it for a number of reasons. First and foremost is that I like reading link roundups myself, but also because I am always finding a lot of great information that should be shared. I feel like witches and pagans come back to life in October. Books are being released, websites (including this one) have fresh ideas flowing into them; maybe witches hibernate during the summer, I know I do. Because of this, there are a ton of links this month!

If you have a favorite witchy post/blog/product to share, please feel free to post it in the comments.

~ October 2017 Magickal Link Roundup ~

13 Grimoire Prompts for Autumn on Witch of Lupine Hollow – Some ideas for things to add to your grimoire this autumn. I have been wanting to do a post like this myself, and this list definitely motivated me; expect more grimoire ideas to appear here in November!

August Eve Altar 2017 on Witchy Words – Lammas altar to inspire you. I love to see other people’s magickal setups.

Between the Light: An Introduction to Tarot Shadow Work on Warts and Cunning Apothecary – I’ve been thinking about writing about ‘shadow work’ lately as well; the Samhain season must be striking a lot of us witches the same way. This post has exercises to perform with the tarot to start exploring your dark side. I especially like the “Meeting Your Shadow Card” section in this article, which I tried out myself.

September 2017 Magickal Link Roundup

First of all, hello everyone! It’s been a long hiatus (almost 3 months!) and I’m not promising to be 100% back just yet. I’ve had a lot going on – which is such a generic thing to say – but more specifically I am dealing with health issues, so self-care has become my #1 priority without exception. My #2 magickal priority is my own coven, and then the blog here is #3. Don’t expect super long posts, but I will try to stop by more often again.

This is a new idea, so who knows if it will stick, but throughout the month I’m always finding great witchy writing around the web that I collect with the hope that I’ll add the best parts of them to my grimoire. I thought it would be fun and maybe even helpful to post them here. If you have a favorite witchy post/blog/product to share, please feel free to post it in the comments.

~ September 2017 Magickal Link Roundup ~

“Autumn Leaf Spirit Sculpture” by Mujuworld – This beautiful little sculpture would be a great addition to Mabon altars, and the artists were bold enough to wish everyone a happy Mabon on the equinox. Any opportunity to support a fellow pagan artists is something I’m always for.

“Becoming Dangerous: A Book About Ritual and Resistance” by Katie West – The link here takes you to West’s Kickstarter campaign, which is for a book of personal essays on ritual by marginalized people. The reference to emoji spells makes me cringe a little, but this book is intriguing and is definitely worth a share.

“Crystal Horoscopes: Healing Gemstones for Virgo Season” on Astro Style – While Astro Style can be fluffy and has only started writing about witchcraft now that it’s popular, their posts can be helpful. This post is a good, basic overview of how to use peridot and moss agate during a Virgo cycle.

Astra Anima’s 2016 Year in Review

I thought it would be nice to end 2016 by posting a year in review for the Astra Anima blog, which I really started writing for in February 2016. It wasn’t until October that I really figured out what I wanted the blog to “be,” and after that point posts became way more frequent and focused. Below are my 18 favorite posts from the year, broken into categories.
