The January 2018 New Moon in Capricorn occurs at 9:17 PM EST on Tuesday, January 16th. The Moon then goes void-of-course at 1:30 AM on the next day (you can also think of it at that evening). The good news is that the Moon is in Sagittarius all day January 15th and it enters Sagittarius at 2:42 PM on Sunday, January 14th, so it will essentially be in Sagittarius for two full days. This gives us plenty of time to work with this New Moon. This information is also detailed in my January 2018 Cosmic Concerns post and is listed below.
New Moon January 2018 Timing
- January 14th, Sunday: Moon enters Capricorn at 2:42 PM
- January 15th, Monday: Moon is in Capricorn all day
- January 16th, Tuesday: Moon is in Capricorn all day; New Moon at 9:42 PM
- January 17th, Wednesday: Moon goes void-of-course at 1:30 AM
Practically speaking, all this means you can do your New Moon ritual on the evening of the 16th (recommended), or any time on the 15th.
The two week manifestation point for this New Moon is on Wednesday, January 31st 2018 with the Full Blue Moon in Leo. The six month manifestation point is on Thursday, June 28th 2018 with the Full Moon in Capricorn.
My guide, Witch’s Guide to New Moon Magick, can be found on the site here; this post is a companion to that guide. If you’re new to Moon magick that’s a great place to begin.
New Moon in Capricorn
Capricorn is the tenth sign of the zodiac, a Cardinal, and an Earth sign that is ruled by Saturn. Capricorn is associated with winter and is associated by my favorite mythological animal, the hippocampus. It is the zodiac’s hard worker, ambitious, and anxious for a project. They are goal-oriented to the point of stubbornness, and can be curmudgeonly thanks to ruling planet Saturn.
In fact, Saturn moved into Capricorn in December 2017, and will stay there until 2020, making this an excellent time to work with Capricorn energy. This sign wants to be at the top of the mountain, and this can make them come off as domineering or egotistical, but they’d say that’s just the price you pay for being the best. Capricorns can also be patient, level-headed, fair dealing, and full of common sense. Yet, they can occasionally be unforgiving, and crave recognition for their work. This is a down-to-Earth sign that, like all Earth signs, isn’t afraid of hard work; as a Cardinal sign, Capricorn initiates action.
Last Capricorn New Moon (December 29th 2016), I suggested setting a goal-oriented intention for the lunar cycle. Because of the Capricorn traits explored above, consider setting an intention to put one or more of your major goals into action. Because Capricorn is a hard working yet level-headed sign, considering choosing a goal, potentially from your list of New Year’s Goals, that’s achievable within the next six months (aka before the Capricorn Full Moon in June). Saturn being at home in Capricorn will give an extra dose of energy, and since it takes outer planets a long time to move through the zodiac, this is an event worth paying attention to. Let the stubborn old goat of the zodiac help you achieve your goal.
If you just aren’t comfortable looking that far ahead, focus on something you can complete before the Full Moon in two weeks. As a Cardinal sign, Capricorn is all about putting plans into action, regardless of the timeline.
For this New Moon there are two suggested cartomancy spreads to choose from: Tarot and Lenormand. Tarot is associated with emotions or the feeling of a situation, while Lenormand is literal and practical. Choose whichever you feel comfortable with or try out both and see which one works best for you.
Suggested Tarot Spread: 3 Cards
Since Capricorn is the sign associated with projects, this tarot spread is built around getting guidance to help achieve a goal. Capricorn is associated with the Devil card in the tarot, the card of temptation and distraction. This card warns you against stubbornness or getting lost in the chase for the eternal carrot; these are the negative aspects of Capricorn. As the saying goes, “The Devil is in the details.” This spread is a straight forward one, designed to help you see what will distract you from your goal, as well as what will help.
Card #1: What will help me achieve my goal during this six month lunar cycle?
Card #2: What will distract me from my goal during this six month lunar cycle?
Card #3: What is the best way to overcome this distraction?
If you get a Major Arcana card this is a ‘big ticket’ item. For the Minor Arcana, Pentacles would indicate finances, career, and money; Cups would indicate feelings, creativity, and relationships; Sword cards indicate intellect and power; and Wands indicate spirituality.
You can choose to read reversed cards in this spread, if you like, or you can read Card #2 as a reverse since it is the ‘distraction’ card. You can use The Devil as a guiding card, placing it on your tarot reading surface, or you can look for it in the spread to indicate that Capricorn is around you. Personally, the Devil is my least favorite tarot card, so I’ll be pulling it out of the deck (just so I can be sure I don’t get it!).
Instead of this spread, you can always ask how best to use the energy of the Capricorn season, or what will help your meet the goals that you set as intentions.
Suggested Lenormand Spreads
Lenormand, unlike tarot, gives more concrete answers that deal with the ‘real world,’ as opposed to tarot dealing the the emotions surrounding events.
There are two Lenormand cards that I personally associate with Capricorn: The Key and The Star. They have different uses, so choose the one that’s best for your intention. The Key is focused on problem solving and ‘unlocking’ the door (a beginning). The Star is more about manifestation, inspiration, and achievement (an end).
The Key Lenormand Spread
For this three-card Lenormand spread, ask your question while shuffling, and then find The Key card. Set down The Key, and then set down, to the right of The Key, the next two cards in the stack. It will look like this:
The Key = Card 1 + Card 2
Then read the cards as a sentence “The Keys to success are Card 1 and Card 2.” Interpret the two cards as what will open up to the door to manifesting of your intention. You can also read it as “The Key opens to the door Card 1 and Card 2” if you prefer to read them as what is behind the door.
The Star Lenormand Spread
For this three-card Lenormand spread, ask your question while shuffling, and then find The Star card. Set down The Star, and then set down, to the left of the Star, the previous two cards in the stack. It will look like this:
Card 1 + Card 2 = The Star
Then read the cards as a sentence “Card 1 and Card 2 will bring The Star” or “First Card 1, then Card 2, then finally The Star.” Interpret the two cards as what will lead up to the manifestation of your intention.
With your intentions set and advice in mind, now you can go into the New Moon cycle and put your intentions to work with actions. The Full Moon in late January is a good time to check in and review your notes, then in June 2018 we’ll meet again to see how we’ve done.
I hope you all found this guide helpful, I’ll be back at the next Moon and we can go through the steps together again. Please feel to share any (positive/constructive) thoughts that you have in the comments. Have a beautiful lunar cycle my friends, and blessed be!
