Full Moon June 9th 2017 in Sagittarius

June’s Full Moon in Sagittarius is giving us a break from the 2017 Moon times roller coaster with an entirely convenient range of times in which to observe it. The Full Moon occurs at 9:10 AM EST on Friday, June 9th, but you can also do your ritual on the evening of the 8th since the Moon is in Sagittarius all day. The Moon stays in Sagittarius until 2:20 AM on the 10th, so if you are charging your crystals you should do so on the night of the 8th.

I highly recommend doing your Full Moon ritual either on the evening of Thursday the 8th or Friday the 9th while the Moon is in Sagittarius, the correct sign to end this six month cycle that started with the New Moon in Sagittarius on November 29th 2016. If you charge items overnight on the 9th the Moon will go void-of-course at 2:20 AM only to move into Capricorn at 7:36 AM. For charging the evening of the 8th works best, and that’s when I’m doing my full ritual, just to keep things simple. If you charge on the 8th but want to wait until the evening of the 9th, after Jupiter has gone direct, that works as well considering that Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter. Do what works best for you and your schedule.

About June’s Full Moon

There are multiple names for May’s Full Moon, but the most common is the Strawberry Moon. Other names are the Rose Moon, Hot Moon, Honey Moon, and Strong Sun Moon. Strawberry Moon comes from Algonquin tribes because it’s a time to gather strawberries. The Rose Moon has similar origins, though modern flowers have been altered to bloom at many times, traditionally roses bloom in late May to early July. Honey Moon is where honeymoon originates from, this is because June was considered a traditional month to wed. In the Pagan tradition, the Beltane season belong to the Lord and Lady of May and represents the cosmic marriage that brings about life; because of this it is traditional to marry once the Beltane season ends out of respect. Strong Sun Moon and Hot Moon make total sense, especially since I live in Florida, where we are being steam cooked every time we leave the house by a combination of heat and humidity. The message of this Full Moon is one of fertility and coaxing your projects into bloom.

Full Moon in Sagittarius

Sagittarius is a Mutable sign and a Fire sign, ruled by Jupiter. Jupiter is in Retrograde until 10:03 AM on the 9th, going direct less than an hour after the Full Moon is at its peak. Sagittarius, as one of the Mutable signs, is more likely to be flexible and go with the flow. Sagittarius is the philosopher of the zodiac, the truth seeker, and the traveler. Sagittarians want to learn and have a depth of knowledge, and they like to wander while doing so. It’s a friendly and social sign that’s lucky and charming because it’s ruled by Jupiter. A Sagittarius looks at the big picture. In November I recommended setting a studying intention for this six month Sagittarius cycle. This is works well for the Beltane season and the start of Midsummer, as this is the time when will continue to grow whatever you have planted earlier this year or harvest what was planted very early in the season. Now that the moon cycle has ended, it’s a good time to review your intentions and decide what you want to move forward with, and what you want to leave behind.

What is Full Moon Magick?

New Moons are used for setting intentions with a manifestation point at the next Full Moon and, way more importantly, a second, larger manifestation at the Full Moon at the six month mark (for this Full Moon it was the New Moon in Sagittarius on November 29th 2016). Full Moons are an excellent time for cleansing, charging, protection, reflection, and spell work.

CHARGING

When I think Full Moon, I think charging. My number one favorite activity to do at the Full Moon is charge my crystals. For your crystals and all of your magickal tools that you use on a regular basis, it’s good to give them a Full Moon charge. This includes crystal grids, magickal jewelry, cauldrons, tarot cards, scrying mirrors, candles, pocket rocks, and pretty much anything you can think of that needs a little boost. Working magickally with things over the course of a month can take the energy out of them, the Full Moon fills them back up.

While I recommend cleansing pocket rocks every day (running them under water is fine since pocket rocks are almost always tumbled stones) they should also be charged under the Full Moon. This imbues them with energy, like recharging a battery. While many people argue that crystals never need charging, I do believe that constant magickal use does “drain” them. For me, charging magickal tools under the Full Moon is like getting their chi realigned. It’s something that I can’t do by myself and is important for their magickal workings, like getting the oil changed in your car. You don’t have to change your oil, but your car isn’t going to be the better for it, and will eventually give out. Anyone who has had sturdy pocket rocks break in half for no good reason knows the consequences of never cleansing or charging your crystals.

For a Sagittarius Full Moon I suggest charging and working Amethyst, Herkimer Diamonds, Jasper, Labradorite, Lapis Lazuli, Obsidian, Peridot, Sodalite, Tourmaline, Turquoise, or Zircon. When working on self-knowledge Herkimer Diamond and Tourmaline are especially recommended.

CLEANSING

Just as a general rule it’s nice to dust off the energy in the house during a Full Moon. I use the classic, white sage, to cleanse my house, but some people really don’t like the smell (my cat hates it) or they don’t like the smoke. In this case you can use lavender incense or essential oil in a diffuser or spray. Thyme, palo santo wood, and cedar can also be used this way. If you absolutely cannot use anything that makes a smell, a cedar wand would be ideal for cleansing your space of negative energy. A besom (magickal broom) can also be used to sweep (with a literal sweeping motion) negative energy out doors. Just remember to open the doors first!

GRIMOIRE

I always journal on the Full Moon, reflecting on my Grimoire (Book of Shadows) entry from the corresponding New Moon, discussing the results of the divination, and seeing how the intentions that I set manifested. It’s also good to look at the intentions from the recent New Moon, in this case, the May 25th 2017 New Moon in Gemini. Your Book of Shadows is the perfect place to write your gratitude list if you don’t use a gratitude jar. I always try to set the evening of the Full Moon aside for “me time,” no matter what’s going on in the rest of my life. It doesn’t always work, but it’s important to try.

SUGGESTED SPELL

Sagittarius is associated with the big questions in life, beliefs, capabilities, and and what you want to do with yourself. This spell works to help you determine the answer to one of these big questions. This can be done during the Full Moon on the 8th or 9th or the Waxing Moon on the night of the 7th after sunset, that way the moon will be in the correct sign. When working with candles remember to always practice fire safety! An Amethyst cluster is recommended for intuition, but it’s optional for the spell. This spell also uses a purple candle to represent intuition, but a white candle could be used in its place. If you don’t have a tarot deck you can use any other intuitive divination system; fire scrying with the candle is a recommended replacement. The spell below is written in a more formal ‘recipe’ style so that it can easily be transcribed into a personal book of shadows/grimoire.

Ingredients:

Amethyst cluster (optional)
Book of Shadows (optional)
Candle holder
Lighter or matches
Purple candle
Slips of paper
Tarot deck, major arcana cards
Writing utensil (optional)

Directions:

To begin, ground and cast a circle to keep unwanted energy away. Hold the amethyst cluster, absorbing its intuitive energy. Light the purple candle and take several deep breaths. Using only the major arcana cards of the tarot ask one of the following questions:

  • How may I better focus my life?
  • What core beliefs do I need illuminated?
  • What hidden capabilities do I possess?

Shuffle the major arcana cards and choose one card. Read the card meaning intuitively or with a guide. Meditate on the answer and then record the question, card, and reflection in your Book of Shadows. Extinguish the candle and unwind the circle; use the amethyst cluster to remind you of your insights.

Below is my quick guide to the major arcana, tailored for this spell:

  • The Fool: Innocence and potential.
  • The Magician: You possess what you need.
  • The High Priestess: Intuition and inner voice.
  • The Empress: Compassion, love, and the natural world.
  • The Emperor: Power and stability.
  • The Hierophant: Following rules, spirituality.
  • The Lovers: Personal relationships, choices.
  • The Chariot: Drive, knowledge, and success.
  • Strength: Strength of spirit.
  • The Hermit: Solitude and inner life.
  • Wheel of Fortune: Fate and living in the moment.
  • Justice: Fairness and karma.
  • The Hanged Man: Letting go and making sacrifices to get what you want.
  • Death: Endings and new beginnings.
  • Temperance: Moderation and going with the flow.
  • The Devil: You hold the keys to your own freedom.
  • The Tower: Things must be destroyed to build something stronger.
  • The Star: Hope and healing.
  • The Moon: The subconscious; dealing with hidden emotions.
  • The Sun: Happiness and joy.
  • Judgment: The future can be changed; review where you want to go.
  • The World: Completion and fulfillment.

AU REVOIR

I hope you all found this guide helpful, I’ll be back at the next Full Moon and we can go on our journey together again. I would love to know how you commemorate the Full Moon and if you have any ideas for magickal workings. Please feel to share any (positive/constructive) thoughts that you have in the comments. Have a beautiful lunar cycle my friends!
